Portfolio Reviews 2011&12

Introduction

This is a list of the most important Photography Portfolio Reviews. It was started in 2011 and is being updated for 2014. We will leave the 2011-2013 information online, however, for two reasons. First, many blogs already link to this post and we don’t want to cause broken linkages. And second, some of the events are biennial, or do not have information on the 2014 editions yet online. So you may want to check the information in the backup section and extrapolate the new dates and prices….

The Reviews are ordered by date of the event, not the deadline for submission. Some reviews accept submissions until a few days before the event (such as Lodz), others close the call many months before (such as Houston Foto Fest), so please have a close look at that.

The reviews can be very different as for the number of participants, the profiles of the reviewers, the fee and how many reviews you get for it. This last criterion is reflected by the Price/Review Ratio, calculated in Euros, at the current exchange rates.

Generally speaking, Portfolio Reviews in the US are by far more expensive than in Europe and the rest of the world. The reason for this seems to be that they are more established and valued as an important career step there, thus American photographers are willing to pay the price. They might also be more “successful” because American photography professionals come to these reviews explicitly in order to find new talents, to exhibit, publish or even buy works.

Other criteria, which might influence your choice are whether you, the photographer, can choose the reviewers beforehand (unfortunately, this is not always clear from the presentation texts), if there are other perks, such as prizes for the best portfolio, and the total number of other participants.

Please leave a comment if you know of a Review that is not mentioned, find a mistake or simply like the article.

Useful Hints:

Why do double work? There are some quite good documents online giving useful hints on how to prepare yourself and your work for the reviews, what to do and what to avoid. The best and most extensive one I found is the Photolucida Review Festival How-to Guidebook (116KB PDF) filled with great information on how to make the most of portfolio reviews.

Others, that were sent to me by Lenscratch blogger Aline Smithson are: Jen Beckman_Portfolio_tips, Mary Virginia Swanson Reviews Tips, and Aline-Smithson Learning.

The Columbia College Chicago has a whole set of Quick Guides, one of them on Portfolio Reviews, where they even tell you how to dress and how to greet. Maybe a bit over-explicit, but usefull for newbies, I guess.

Better and more extensive: Jasmine DeFoore‘s Portfolio Review Dos and Don’ts.

Many of the above listed Reviews also give more special tips for their specific venue, on the correspondent web page…

About the authors:

Moritz Neumüller has directed the Portfolio Review Descubrimientos PHotoEspaña during the years 2004-07 and is currently curatorial advisor of PhotoIreland Festival, as well as director of the photography department of the IED Madrid. As a reviewer, Moritz is interested in seeing contemporary work made by photographers and media artists from around the world, especially documentary, social and conceptual work. In the case that he himself cannot include you in one of the shows he curates for festivals and institutions, Moritz is known to try his best to give useful advice, casual mentoring and even contact information of other people who might well be interested in your work. He initiated The Curator Ship in 2010.

Eufalia Paz de Almeida is a Brazilean photographer based in Italy. She was part of the European Master of Fine Art Photography in its first edition, 2011-12, and has been collaborating with The Curator Ship since late 2011.

Aida Lirola and Mariona Puig are students of the photography Postgraduate course at IDEP Barcelona and collaborators of The Curator Ship since 2013.
