Introduction
Just in time for the New Year, I have prepared a list of 2011′s most important Photography Portfolio Reviews, 24 in total, plus 4 more in 2012 (because they are biennial).
The Reviews are ordered by date of the event, not the deadline for submission. Some reviews accept submissions until a few days before the event (such as Lodz), others close the call many months before (such as Houston Foto Fest), so please have a close look at that.
The reviews can be very different as for the number of participants, the profiles of the reviewers, the fee and how many reviews you get for it. This last criterion is reflected by the Price/Review Ratio, calculated in Euros, at the current exchange rates. The best rate this year could be achieved by the Portfolio Reviews in Cork, Irland (sorry, submission is already closed), with a value of 3,33 Euros, thanks to the support of their sponsors, Culture Ireland, the Polish embassy and the Crawford Art Gallery.
Generally speaking, Portfolio Reviews in the US are by far more expensive than in Europe and the rest of the world. The reason for this seems to be that they are more established and valued as an important career step there, thus American photographers are willing to pay the price. They might also be more “successful” because American photography professionals come to these reviews explictly in order to find new talents, to exhibit, publish or even buy works.
Other criteria, which might influence your choice are whether you, the photographer, can choose the reviewers beforehand (unfortunately, this is not always clear from the presentation texts), if there are other perks, such as prizes for the best portfolio, and the total number of other participants.
Please leave a comment if you know of a Review that is not mentioned, find a mistake or simply like the article. After a revision phase, this information will be available in a PDF document, here, and also will be published in a forthcoming handbook for photographers to be published in early 2011.

Useful Hints:
Why do double work? There are some quite good documents online giving useful hints on how to prepare yourself and your work for the reviews, what to do and what to avoid. The best and most extensive one I found is the Photolucida Review Festival How-to Guidebook (116KB PDF) filled with great information on how to make the most of portfolio reviews.
Others, that were sent to me by Lenscratch blogger Aline Smithson are: Jen Beckman_Portfolio_tips, Mary Virginia Swanson Reviews Tips, and Aline-Smithson Learning.
The Columbia College Chicago has a whole set of Quick Guides, one of them on Portfolio Reviews, where they even tell you how to dress and how to greet. Maybe a bit over-explicit, but usefull for newbies, I guess.
Better and more extensive: Jasmine DeFoore‘s Portfolio Review Dos and Don’ts.
Many of the above listed Reviews also give more special tips for their specific venue, on the correspondent web page…

Photographers, art collectors, and photo enthusiasts–
We’re very pleased to announce that Lens Culture has teamed up with Fotografiska,
(The Swedish Museum of Photography), to host the first large-scale professional
Portfolio Reviews in Stockholm on May 27-28, 2011.
Over the course of two days, 100 photographers will engage in one-on-one meetings and portfolio reviews with 35 international photography experts, including museum curators, gallery owners, festival directors, magazine editors, photobook publishers and representatives from photo agencies. These meetings offer photographers tremendous opportunities for career development, including potential editorial assignments, book publication contracts, art gallery representation, participation in international exhibitions, feature articles in magazines, as well as extensive business networking.
The event is limited to 100 photographers, so we urge serious, mid-career photographers to register now.
We believe that formal portfolio reviews like this are among the most proactive and efficient ways for serious, career-oriented photographers to meet many international photography experts and colleagues in a professional atmosphere. Photographers connect directly with people who can help them with artistic and business goals. It’s great for the reviewers too – they discover new talent, as well as the latest work of photographers who are already established.
More details can be found at the website: spwk.eu
The Portfolio Reviews are just part of the very exciting first annual Stockholm Photography Week, which takes place May 23-29, 2011.
Stockholm Photography Week is a week-long celebration of international contemporary photography.
Jan Broman, co-founder and co-director of Fotografiska, says, “Stockholm Photography Week is all about developing as a photographer: through one-to-one meetings with international photography experts, workshops with fantastic photographers, and through inspiring seminars and artist lectures.”
Workshops, seminars and exhibitions include:
• Workshops with two internationally renowned photographers: Mary Ellen Mark and Anders Petersen.
• Exhibitions by world-renowned photographic artists Edward Burtynsky and Albert Watson.
• Artist lectures and seminars, including a free workshop on making photo books.
• A special, 2-hour Open Portfolio Night (open to the public), where art collectors and photography lovers can meet with all of the artists participating in the portfolio reviews — and perhaps purchase some art directly from these great talents.
• Our 2-day photography portfolio review with 35 photography experts from three continents, and 100+ international photographers.
Hope to see you there!
Cheers,
Jim Casper, founder and director, Lens Culture

Portfolio Review 2011
Meeting Place for Artists and Experts of the national and International Photography Scene
Within the scope of the 4th Fotofestival Mannheim_Ludwigshafen_Heidelberg, the Portfolio Review on September 9/10, 2011, constitutes a highlight of our festival program!
The Portfolio Review provides the opportunity for an effective exchange between photographers and selected photography experts and is directed at upper-division students, art school graduates, as well as freelance artists and photographers.
In three twenty-minute one-on-one conversations, participants enter into a fascinating dialogue with curators, publishers, gallery owners, and art critics. They receive feedback and encouragement and furthermore have the opportunity to establish important contacts for their further development.
After the portfolios have been reviewed, the reviewers determine their favorites. Within the scope of the 4th Fotofestival, the first three favorites will be presented in their own exhibition at the Print Media Academy in Heidelberg. The Fotofestival supports the organization of this exhibition with a production grant of €500 for each of the three artists. In addition, myphotobook.de provides the first favorite with a €1,000 gift certificate toward the production of photo books!
Ten additional positions from the selection of favorites will be presented in the virtual gallery of our festival website (Virtual gallery of the 3rd Fotofestival).
Each of the participants in the Portfolio Review receives a €20 gift certificate from myphotobook.de.
The venue is the Print Media Academy in Heidelberg.

Kassel Photobook Festival – Dummy Book Award
Filed under: Photo Book NEWS — Doug Stockdale @ 9:12 pm
The 4th annual Kassel Photobook Festival is again sponsoring their 2011 Dummy Book Award.
From the Festival: Enter your unpublished photobook for our Dummy Award 2011 now and win a complete book production.
The inaugural Dummy Award 2010 was one of the highlights of the last festival. From a total of 489 registrations and 431 submitted dummies, 56 books were chosen for the exhibition and competition.
Win a complete photobook production
Unpublished photobooks of any kind are admissible. This includes handmade artist books as well as digitally created editions. A jury made up of internationally renowned members will select the 3 best books. The winning book will once again be produced and published by our publishing and printing partner seltmann+söhne. This work will also be portrayed in the magazine European Photography. The 2nd and 3rd prizes will be sponsored by our partner blurb: The 2nd prize is books produced by blurb to the value of 500 Euros, the 3rd prize books to the value of 300 Euros. Both prizes include publication on blurbs »bluberati blog« (http://blog.blurb.com), »staff picks« (book presentations on the blurb bookstore website) and free entry to the blurb »Photo Book Now« 2011 competition. 3 works which catch the attention of our jury due to their outstanding photographic excellence but don’t fulfil the specific book design criteria will be rewarded with photobook dummy reviews by schaden.com / White Press.
A major criterion for the prize selection is the successful merging of excellent photographic work with the special design elements of the book medium. To prepare for our annual Dummy Award we strongly recommend participation in one of the festival workshops that focus on the design and production of photobooks. One of the goals of the Dummy Award is to raise the quality of the photographic book.
So if you are interested and what more information, check it out here: http://2011.fotobookfestival.org/en/dummy_award/

Marina
March 28, 2012
Hello,
do you have some information regarding portfolio reviews for visual artists that work in drawing and painting?
Thanks.
Moritz Neumüller
April 9, 2012
Dear Marina,
Portfolio Reviews are a specific modus operandi of the photography field. The correspondent activity in painting and drawing would be the classic studio visit. It fulfills the same goals as a PF review, i.e. constructive feedback on the work, discussing exhibition possibilities, networking, etc.
Depending where you are located, you could organize such meetings yourself, at best, together with other artists. Tell us more about your doings and we will try to help you with the brainstorming….
Moritz & team
