About the authors

Introduction

This is a list of the most important Photography Portfolio Reviews. It was started in 2011 and is being updated for 2015. Please visit the information on 2011-2014, as, some of the events are biennial, or do not have information on the 2015 editions yet online. So you may want to check the information in the backup section and extrapolate the new dates and prices….

The Reviews are ordered by date of the event, not the deadline for submission. Some reviews accept submissions until a few days before the event (such as Lodz), others close the call many months before (such as Houston Foto Fest), so please have a close look at that.

The reviews can be very different as for the number of participants, the profiles of the reviewers, the fee and how many reviews you get for it. This last criterion is reflected by the Price/Review Ratio, calculated in Euros, at the current exchange rates.

Generally speaking, Portfolio Reviews in the US are by far more expensive than in Europe and the rest of the world. The reason for this seems to be that they are more established and valued as an important career step there, thus American photographers are willing to pay the price. They might also be more “successful” because American photography professionals come to these reviews explicitly in order to find new talents, to exhibit, publish or even buy works.

Other criteria, which might influence your choice are whether you, the photographer, can choose the reviewers beforehand (unfortunately, this is not always clear from the presentation texts), if there are other perks, such as prizes for the best portfolio, and the total number of other participants.

Please leave a comment if you know of a Review that is not mentioned, find a mistake or simply like the article.

The New York Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP NY) is hosting its free Ninth Annual Fine Art Portfolio Review on the evening of February 18th, just for its members. The New York Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers is the largest photographers’ organization in the world. ASMP has over 7,000 members, including many of the worldʼs greatest photographers, in 40 chapters nationwide.

Influential gallerists, curators, collectors, publishers and dealers will review portfolios and share their valuable feedback with photographers. ASMP NY organizes this anticipated portfolio review to nurture relationships in the fine art community and give photographers opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have as easily.

The objective of this night is an emphasis on honest feedback that photographers rarely get. Reviewers are asked to quickly look at and critique a variety of types of work and give feedback on presentation, consistency and what parts of the portfolio are working as well as any that are not. Reviewers can offer both feedback and direction.

A physical portfolio is required: no laser copies, iPads or computers. All ASMP members are eligible to register for this free, 2 1/4 hour, event. Registration is required and places fill up quickly. There will be a wait list.

Useful Hints:

Why do double work? There are some quite good documents online giving useful hints on how to prepare yourself and your work for the reviews, what to do and what to avoid. The best and most extensive one I found is the Photolucida Review Festival How-to Guidebook (116KB PDF) filled with great information on how to make the most of portfolio reviews.

Others, that were sent to me by Lenscratch blogger Aline Smithson are: Jen Beckman_Portfolio_tips, Mary Virginia Swanson Reviews Tips, and Aline-Smithson Learning.

The Columbia College Chicago has a whole set of Quick Guides, one of them on Portfolio Reviews, where they even tell you how to dress and how to greet. Maybe a bit over-explicit, but usefull for newbies, I guess.

Better and more extensive: Jasmine DeFoore‘s Portfolio Review Dos and Don’ts.

Many of the above listed Reviews also give more special tips for their specific venue, on the correspondent web page…
