August Sander Prize for portrait photography. Deadline: Feb. 28, 2018 

A new prize for portrait photography will be awarded every two years from 2018. The “August Sander Prize” is endowed with 5,000. – € and is sponsored by Ulla Bartenbach and Prof. Dr. Kurt Bartenbach in cooperation with the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne.
In addition to the prize money, an exhibition in the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur will be organised in consultation with the prizewinner.
The awarding of the prize combines the idea of promoting young contemporary artistic approaches in the sense of factual and conceptual photography. National and international artists up to 40 years of age with a focus on photography are eligible to participate.
The naming of the prize is explained by the fact that The Photographic Collection/SK Foundation Culture owns the August Sander Archive, the world’s largest collection of original works by August Sander (1876-1964). Against the background of August Sander’s important portrait photographs, the photographic works of the applicants should primarily relate to the theme of the human portrait.
The jury is made up of five members: a curator, an art historian from the academic field, an artist, a representative of the founding family and a representative of the Photographical Collection/SK Foundation Culture.

CAP Prize 2018, for African Photography. Deadline: Feb. 7, 2018

The call for entries to the CAP Prize 2018 is open from 7 November 2017 until 7 February 2018. Enter your work that engages with the African continent or its diaspora now and win a series of large scale outdoor exhibitions around the globe. 25 international curators, publishers, editors and artists will review your work. 25 artists will be shortlisted and five short listed artists awarded with the CAP Prize 2018.

The CAP Prize consists of global exposure at major international photography exhibitions and is awarded during the Image Afrique Festival in Basel, Switzerland. The CAP Prize winners exhibition was previously on show at LagosPhoto Festival in Nigeria, at FIFCV Festival Internacional de Fotografia de Cabo Verde or Eyes On – European Month of Photography in Vienna just to name a few. The five CAP Prize winners are invited to the main exhibition at the Image Afrique Festival and will spend one week in Basel during Art Basel, all costs covered. A catalog documenting the five winners works will be published in time for the award ceremony.
Each of the five awardees have the chance to be featured by many of our media partners.

In a nutshell: CAP Prize raises the winners’ international exposure and builds a high level network for future projects.

LE PRIX HSBC POUR LA PHOTOGRAPHIE
Created in April 1995, the Prix HSBC pour la Photographie, is now in its 23th year of accompanying young photographic creation and undertakes to support even more strongly the work of its award winners. The HSBC Prize supports the two photographers by:
► Publishing each artist’s first monograph
► Creating and organising the travelling exhbition of their works at cultural venues in France and/or abroad.
► Production of new works, presented during the last stage.
► Acquisition by HSBC France of six works by each award winner for its photography collection.

The contest is open to photographers:
• living and older than 18 years
• Of any nationality
• Not having published a monograph published by a trade publisher (exhibition catalogs do not count)
• Being able to provide a minimum of 70 photographs of all the work presented for the production of the monograph.

The 2018 Competition is open from 1 September to 10 November 2017.

HCB Award for photography projects. Deadline: April 29, 2017.

Presented by the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, the HCB Award supports the creation of a photography project with a 35 000 € grant, which could not be achieved without this help. In Conflict

Conflicts, whether economic, political or religious, conflicts for power, land, water, oil, are evermore widespread and frequent, and are setting entire populations adrift with consequences and repercussions that are now evident in the ‘rich and stable’ countries of the world. Conflicts are sometimes presented as a clash of civilizations or wars between believers and unbelievers, in which everyone is entrenched behind fears, habits or mutual ignorance.

All the above cause instability and crises which find their particular form of expression according to the area of the world: wars continue to spread and increasingly overwhelm larger territories in the Middle East, coups and outbreaks of violence are frequent in Africa, in the United States we have witnessed the fiercest presidential campaign in the nation’s history, and fortress-Europe ‘under siege’, shaken by its internal problems appears to be faltering. Certainties built up over time are falling short, opening fissures which weaken habitual thought systems. However, they also present us with an opportunity to open up and observe the world differently. After a period of closure and introspection there are signs of renewed curiosity and attention to all that is outside. Signs of bienveillance and tolerance which represent the first steps towards a coming together, the willingness to start a dialogue in search of solutions which are found in common rather than individually.

By proposing ‘In Conflict’ photographers and artists have the opportunity to reflect on a theme which emphasizes and encourages this ‘return’ to a collective consciousness or a consciousness at the service of communities. In this sense the theme also talks about conflicts which are denied or kept silent, which relate to the family or to personal conflicts that can go beyond the personal sphere that are also questions of society, such as violence against women, societal unease, the individual’s inner conflicts. Another priority for Visible White Photo Prize’s call ‘In Conflict’, is to invite photographers and artists using the photographic medium to explore with the use of original and personal forms of visual language, distant worlds, intimate universes, or to venture further afield into new forms of documentary photography or poetic realism. Or to look for alternatives or complementary ways to those distributed by television or internet’s information processing that have changed the traditional codes of photojournalism.

Artists have always shown us the way, how to witness, take a stand or denounce creatively, inventing new forms of expression, at times very personal, often with the aid of mediums and supports. At a time when general labels are coming unstuck and technology facilitates the hybridization of languages, imagination and vision should be boundless, leaving the road open to photography’s wide variety of languages to query and explore the world.  Laura Serani, November 2016.

Guidelines to compete for the Photography Prize

Eligibility

The photography prize of the Fondation des Treilles is open to all professional photographers with neither age limit nor nationality considerations. Photographers must have already published or exhibited their work.

The subject of their project can be anything from landscape to architecture, social or archeological photography, as long as it is closely related to the Mediterranean world.

Digital or conventional, the technique used to produce the work must be applied with a spirit of durability and conservation.

 

Judging

The jury, is chaired by Mrs Laura Serani, former director of photography, audiovisual and Fnac Collection, curator and artistic director of several major photographic events (as Les rencontres de Bamako, biennale africaine de la photographie), Artistic Associate of the Month of Photography 2014 in Paris, writer and critic. The other members are: Ezzaïm Hassan, Director of the Villa des Arts Rabat / Casablanca, ONA Foundation, Charles-Henri Filippi, collector, Chairman of Citigroup France, Costa Gavras, film director, Macha Makeieff, director of theater, Director of the National “Theâtre de la Criée” in Marseille, Jean-Luc Monterosso (Director of the “Maison Européenne de la Photographie”) and Sarah Moon, photographer, film-maker.

The jury’s decision will be final and not subject to appeal.

 

Prize: reminder

The prize is made of both an allowance of 2650 euros per month for a period ranging from two to eight months depending on the project, coming with a living residency.

The duration of the cash allowance will be decided by the jury depending on the project. All the expenses due to the realization of the project and more specifically travel costs will remain at the charge of the winner

As far as the residence is concerned, its maximum duration is of 8 months. By the way, it can not last less than one month, specially in order to insure the achievement of the development of the photos at Les Treilles.

 

Liabilities

Photographers shall guarantee that their works do not infringe the rights of third parties (image rights, right to private property, etc) or that they have obtained the necessary reproduction and exhibition permissions from these parties.

Entering the competition implies full acceptance of the terms of participation.

FINAL SELECTION

Applicants chosen at the conclusion of the pre selection phase have to submit a hard copy application to the following address: Fondation des Treilles, Prix “Résidence pour la photographie”, 90 rue de Varenne, 75007 Paris.

It requires:

A supporting text in French or English presenting the project and explaining the author’s approach of the chosen topic. The text should also mention if the applicant has already been awarded in other former prizes.

From 10 to 20 prints of a minimum A4 size up to an A3 maximum format.

A signed letter where the applicant (if awarded) undertakes the cession of at least 3 prints and the copyrights of such images in the strict limit of an institutional use. The prints will be part of the art collection of la Fondation des Treilles.

A stamped envelope or any form of package at the right format for the return of the prints to the applicants that have not been selected. Applications sent without the requested return envelope or unvalid stamping will not be returned.

Objeto de la convocatoria:

Visual Entidad de Gestión de Artistas Plásticos (VEGAP), convocan la XX edición del Concurso Propuestas de Ayudas a la Creación Visual.

El propósito de nuestras ayudas es la promoción de la creación artística a través de la financiación económica de los proyectos de aquellos autores que se expresan a través de la creación visual, posibilitando el desarrollo de su trabajo, al hilo de su proceso de investigación y la creación de nuevas obras.

Podrán participar en esta convocatoria los creadores visuales residentes en España que no hayan recibido ayudas de la Fundación Arte y Derecho o de VEGAP en las tres últimas convocatorias de Propuestas.

Presentación de los proyectos:

El plazo de presentación de los proyectos se abrirá el 3 de mayo de 2016 y finalizará el 17 de octubre de 2016.

Para hacer llegar los proyectos puede procederse de la siguiente forma:

Los proyectos se enviarán digitalmente a través de la página web: http://www.propuestasvegap.com, completando la información solicitada en cada uno de los campos del formulario de inscripción alojado y adjuntando la documentación que a continuación se indica:

1.- Fotocopia del DNI o de la tarjeta o permiso de residencia (1 página)
2.- Currículum vitae (1 página).
3.- Una memoria descriptiva de la obra o proyecto creativo que se quiere realizar (1 página).
4.- Calendario de trabajo y presupuesto total del proyecto, con indicación de la ayuda económica que se solicita, adjuntando en 1 página el desglose en el que se indique cada uno de los gastos que se precisen efectuar.
5.- Dossier gráfico con un máximo de 10 imágenes de obra reciente, bocetos o trabajos personales realizados por el autor (hasta un máximo de 10 páginas. Los proyectos de nuevas tecnologías podrán ir acompañados, además, de una url a un link externo).

La extensión de la documentación aportada en el archivo que se adjunte no superará las 15 páginas, incluido el formulario digital. La documentación deberá aportarse en el orden indicado y en ningún caso podrá consistir en el envío de originales de las obras. El formato del archivo deberá ser un pdf con un peso total de 14 megas.

Los proyectos deberán incluirse en alguna de las siguientes categorías:

Los proyectos se integrarán en la categoría seleccionada por sus autores en el campo correspondiente del formulario de inscripción digital de la página web: http://www.propuestasvegap.com

Podrán presentarse varios proyectos diferentes del mismo autor en una misma categoría, pero no en categorías diferentes. La inclusión de un mismo proyecto en una categoría determinará su exclusión de las restantes.

El cumplimiento de estos requisitos es condición “sine qua non” para la aceptación de los autores que deseen participar, por lo que la contravención de esta obligación conllevará la pérdida del derecho a participar en la convocatoria.

Asignación

La asignación total de la convocatoria asciende a 70.000 euros.

Cada una de las cinco categorías: Artes Plásticas, Fotografía, Diseño, Ilustración y Nuevas Formas de Expresión Artística, contará con una asignación de 14.000 euros, correspondiendo 7.000 euros a cada uno de los 2 ganadores que resulten seleccionados en cada categoría.

En el supuesto de que alguna categoría quedase desierta o no se agotase la cantidad destinada, el importe excedente se repartirá entre las categorías restantes, mejorando la asignación de cada categoría en forma proporcional.

Resolución:

La resolución de concesión de las ayudas será decidida por un Jurado formado únicamente por artistas de reconocido prestigio, nombrado por el Consejo de Administración de VEGAP. La decisión del Jurado será inapelable.

VEGAP comunicará el fallo del Jurado el día 3 de noviembre de 2016 a través de la página web de VEGAP, y de http://www.propuestasvegap.com
