CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The concept of materiality is in question. Digital media, once thought by artists and scholars alike to be fundamentally intangible, has been demonstrated in recent years to have very real effects on the physical world. The transformation of data into engaging, interactive formats (online gaming, mobile software, networked art) has shown that digital media distributed across networks has the power to educate, to connect, to visualize a politic and produce emotional response. This [Inter}web of relations functions mimics key properties of another technological achievement: textiles. Ironically, one of the human race’s oldest technologies serves as the perfect metaphor for its latest inventions. And, as the digital age marches on, artists and industry alike must consider the possibility of ‘digital textiles’. What terms will define the digital textile? Is a digital textile purely light and numbers, or is it hybrid—straddling virtual and physical space? What does the evolution of textiles from analog to digital media imply or reveal about the narrative of human progress?
Subtle Technologies seeks submissions of video art and animation that explore or expand the definition of the digital textile and speculate its future. Selected videos will be presented in the program Cloaked In Code and will be screened in Toronto on May 13th, 2016 during Future Proof, a wearable technology fashion show as part of the 19th Annual Subtle Technologies Festival.
Selected applicants will gain critical exposure to influential Canadian makers and thinkers as well as leaders in the Toronto fashion and wearable technology communities. The Cloaked In Code program will also be accessible to an international audience, hosted on the Subtle Technologies website from May through August, 2016.
You may submit up to 5 hyperlinks to videos or animations for consideration. Please enclose any necessary information for password-protected files.
