THE MARC DE MONTALEMBERT PRIZE
The Marc de Montalembert Foundation and the French Institut national d’histoire de l’art (INHA) have formed
a partnership to sponsor the Marc de Montalembert Prize of 8,000 euros. The grant will be awarded to support
a research project whose outcome must constitute an original contribution to the knowledge of the arts of the
Mediterranean world. The Foundation will also offer the grant holder the possibility of a residency at its
headquarters in Rhodes, Greece.
To be eligible the candidate must :
– be born in a country bordering the Mediterranean or be a citizen of that country,
– be under 35 years of age on November 1st, 2012,
– hold a PhD degree (doctorate) or be of equivalent academic stature.
Evaluation of candidates
The evaluation of candidates will be based on their curriculum vitae and on their project’s originality, feasibility and
relevance to the Mediterranean world. The project presentations should be written preferably in French, though
those in English will be also considered. They must include a work schedule, a precise indication of how the candidate
intends to work within one of the Institute’s specific academic research field, an estimate of expenses, a description
of the final form the project will take, and specifications concerning its potential publication. The research proposal
must be accompanied by a hand-written covering letter of intent in French, and two letters of reference by qualified
professionals capable of certifying the dependability of the candidate as well as the quality of the research project.
Only individual projects will be considered.
Implementation of the grant
The project will be carried out over a period of one year. It will comprise first a month in Paris as a visiting
scholar of the Institute, and, upon completion of the project, a second stay in Paris during which the result of
the grant holder’s work will presented to a selected public. The cost of both trips and living expenses incurred
will be covered jointly by the Foundation and the Institute. The grant holder will receive the benefit of tutorial
counsel from a member of the Institute’s academic staff with whom (s)he will stay in touch for the duration of
the project. The result of his(er) work will be published in an appropriate form with the help of the Institute.
– Applications will be accepted from September 1st, 2012 to November, 1st 2012,
– Application deadline : November 1st 2012 – the postmark vouching for the date,
– The Prize winner will be announced in the second half of January 2013.
Im portant reminders
The applications must include: a curriculum vitae, a photograph of an official identity document, the project
written in French or English, the project’s link with one of the Institute specific field of study, a work schedule,
a budget estimate, a hand-written letter of intent, and two recommendation letters. Incomplete applications
will not be considered.
