“A place for discoveries” – That’s what the German magazine art wrote about VIDEONALE, the international festival for contemporary video art. From 14 April to 29 May 2011 the 13th edition of VIDEONALE takes place at Kunstmuseum Bonn/Germany. You can submit single or – this year for the first time – multi channel works created in the past two years for VIDEONALE 13. The entry deadline is 20 September, 2010 (post mark). Founded in 1984 the biannually initiated VIDEONALE is counted amongst the oldest festivals for video art in Germany and Europe. Besides its high standard of presented works, VIDEONALE reached a widely accepted reputation in its attempt to develop new forms of presentation for video art. Like in the past also at VIDEONALE 13 a team of architects and designers will develop a cutting-edge exhibition architecture to meet the requirements of the reception of media art. For the 13th VIDEONALE about 40 works will be chosen by an international jury of experts and afterwards be presented in a six-week exhibition in Bonn. The show will open with a four-day festival featuring a variety of events. Starting in late summer the works of VIDEONALE 13 will be shown at further art institutions worldwide in the context of VIDEONALE ON TOUR. The works of VIDEONALE 12 were shown at the video art fair LOOP Barcelona/Spain, at the Museum of Modern Art in Glasgow/Scotland, at INVIDEO festival in Milan/Italy, at Bavarian House in Odessa/Ukraine, at several venues in Taipei/Taiwan and at the National Gallery of Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo/Bosnia-Herzegovina. There’s no set topic for submissions, but the submitted work mustn’t be older than two years (i.e. starting January 2008). The exhibits will automatically be taking part in the competition for the VIDEONALE-AWARD which will be awarded by an international prize-jury. Deadline for submission is 20 September 2010. III Concurso Internacional de Fotografía sobre Violencia. Deadline: 31 Octubre de 2010

1. Las fotografías deben representar la temática de los Derechos Humanos.
2. Los archivos fotográcos deben titularse haciendo referencia a los derechos que hayan querido expresarse
mediante la imagen. Los títulos pueden ser poéticos o simplemente descriptivos.
3. Los trabajos han de ser originales, no habiendo sido presentados en otros concursos.
4. El concurso está abierto a estudiantes, amateurs y profesionales de cualquier nacionalidad, vivan o no en
España.
5. La fecha límite de entrega será el 31 de octubre de 2010.
6. Las fotografías se enviarán a la siguiente dirección: Camino Casa Clemencia nº 4, 46010 –Valencia- (España).
7. La obra se entregará en formato digital TIFF a máxima calidad y JPEG de dos megas máximo, en soporte CD
o DVD, con el título junto al seudónimo o nombre del autor. Se admitirán hasta cuatro fotografías por
participante. No se devolverá el CD o DVD.
8. Las fotografías deberán tener una resolución mínima de 300 ppp (píxeles por pulgada) en una de las
siguientes proporciones: 60 x 60 cm / 60 x 30 cm (vertical) / 100 x 20 cm.
9. Junto a las fotografías se enviará el formulario de datos personales (cumplimentado de forma clara y legible,
y rmado por el autor aceptando los términos de las bases). El sobre se entregará cerrado, con el seudónimo
o nombre del autor escrito en el exterior, su dirección y teléfono. El formulario de inscripción podrá
descargarse de la web http://www.centroreinasoa.es.
10. La técnica fotográca será libre (clásica, digital, collage, intervenida, blanco y negro, etc.). Se valorará la
creatividad y la sensibilidad con que se aborde el tema.
11. La elección de los premios correrá a cargo de un jurado establecido por el Centro Reina Sofía. La decisión del
jurado será inapelable y se tomará teniendo en cuenta la calidad artística de las obras, su valor creativo y su
originalidad.
12. La organización se reserva el derecho en la elección del Premio Especial Centro Reina Sofía.
13. Cada participante podrá optar a un único premio.
14. Los ganadores serán informados del fallo del jurado telefónicamente.
15. El resultado del concurso se dará a conocer a través de la página web del Centro Reina Sofía
(www.centroreinasoa.es) y se dará difusión del mismo en páginas y revistas especializadas.
16. Los participantes conceden al Centro Reina Sofía los derechos de distribuir, ejecutar y mostrar las imágenes
presentadas. La obra ganadora del concurso quedará en propiedad del Centro Reina Sofía.
17. La organización presupone que dicha persona posee los derechos sobre la obra presentada, por lo que no
asume ninguna responsabilidad derivada en este extremo por parte de alguno de los concursantes.
18. El Centro Reina Sofía tiene prevista la organización de una original exposición coincidiendo con el “Día
Mundial de los Derechos Humanos” donde, además de las fotografías ganadoras, podrán participar otras
imágenes seleccionadas por el jurado.
19. Los participantes cuyos trabajos incluyan imágenes de menores de edad han de contar con la autorización
de los padres/tutores. Para ello deberán incluir en el sobre de participación un modelo de autorización que

VIDA 13.0 Prize – Deadline: 7th November 2010

At a time when the notion of life is once again located in an uncertain domain, a wide range of artistic initiatives come together to illustrate and investigate this phenomenon; they examine the impact on the collective conscience and the way it is manifested in cultural, technological and social thought.

Over the last decade, in the same formal space, VIDA has been bringing together inter-disciplinary projects that respond to this situation. By means of formal strategies that defy the boundaries between existing practices, these projects offer new ways of reflecting on what we understand by life and artificial life.

Fundación Telefónica announces the VIDA 13.0 Art & Artificial Life International Competition, which for the last twelve years has awarded prizes for artistic projects using technological mediums offering innovative approaches to research into artificial life.

The projects may be based on systems which emulate, imitate or speculate on the notion of life through current research and technology. These systems may involve attributes of agency and autonomy which display specific behaviour, are dynamic, react to their surroundings and evolve, and which question the frontiers between what is alive and what is not, between synthetic and organic life.

As in previous years there are two categories to the competition:

FINISHED PROJECTS

In this category VIDA 13.0 will award prizes to artistic ALife projects developed after 2008. The sum of 40,000 Euros will be shared between the projects selected by the jury: First Prize: 18,000 Euros, Second Prize: 14,000 Euros, and Third Prize: 8,000 Euros. In addition seven honourable mentions will be awarded.

ARTISTIC PRODUCTION INCENTIVES IN IBEROAMERICA, SPAIN AND PORTUGAL

In this category VIDA 13.0 helps to fund artistic ALife projects that have not yet been produced. This is aimed at citizens or residents of countries comprising Latin America, Spain and Portugal. The sum of 40,000 Euros will be shared between the selected projects.

The works submitted will be examined by an international panel composed of José-Carlos Mariátegui (Peru), Mónica Bello Bugallo (Spain), Nell Tenhaaf (Canada) Rodrigo Alonso (Argentina), Simon Penny (USA/Australia), Zhang Ga (USA/China) and Francisco Serrano (General Director of Fundación Telefónica).

Hemos tenido que inventarnos una nueva categoria, Curiosidades, para que nos encaje este Posting: ¡Lanzan una feria de arte por internet!

Con la colaboración de imporantes galerías internacionales -White Cube de Londres o Gagosian Gallery de Nueva York se cuentan entre la docena de entidades “fundadoras”, en las que, por ahora, no se incluye ninguna española-, acaba de anunciarse la celebración de VIP Art Fair, la primera feria de arte por internet, con una duración de 9 días, del 22 al 30 de enero próximos, durante los cuales los coleccionistas de arte contemporáneo tendrán “acceso a obras de artistas aclamados por la crítica con la posibilidad de conectarse de forma personal con marchantes de arte reconocidos internacionalmente, desde cualquier parte del mundo y sin salir de casa”, según reza la nota hecha pública por sus creadores, entre los que figuran los galeristas de James Cohan Gallery, con sedes en Nueva York y Shanghai.

Según la nota hecha pública, “el revolucionario diseño de VIP Art Fair ofrece a los coleccionistas la oportunidad de apreciar obras de arte en línea de una manera nunca vista. La novedosa tecnología de VIP Art Fair presenta las obras en relación a otras obras de arte y a escala relativa al cuerpo humana. Los visitantes interesados podrán ampliar las imágenes para examinar en detalle la superficie de una pintura, obtener vistas múltiples de una obra tridimensional y ver vídeos de obras multimedias. Las galerías proporcionarán todos los datos sobre las obras y los artistas, entre ellos, las biografías, artículos de catálogos, películas y entrevistas de artistas e información detallada para coleccionistas”. Y recuerda que “entre las muchas características distintivas de la Feria, destaca la interacción entre el marchante y el coleccionista. Los marchantes tendrán la posibilidad de mantener conversaciones con los coleccionistas a través de un servicio de mensajería instantánea, por Skype o por teléfono para hablar sobre las obras en venta en el stand virtual. Además, también podrán permitir el acceso a su inventario privado y compartir obras con clientes en tiempo real en las salas privadas virtuales creadas especialmente con este propósito”.

“En los recorridos virtuales, que son el elemento principal de la experiencia de VIP Art Fair -añade la nota- los visitantes pueden elegir entre una amplia selección de ellos, ya sea de obras destacadas o recorridos creados por coleccionistas, críticos y conservadores de los museos participantes. También podrán diseñar sus propios recorridos personalizados con sus obras preferidas, que podrán compartir con sus amigos o publicar en la sala VIP”. Además, “la sala VIP es el lugar donde los visitantes podrán ver vídeos de colecciones privadas y estudios de artistas especialmente elaborados para la ocasión, además de realizar los recorridos de la Feria creados por otros visitantes, acceder a actualizaciones de noticias sobre el mercado del arte y enterarse de nuevas obras expuestas en la Feria”. Capture Brooklyn Contest: Deadline August 29th

Capture Brooklyn, a new initiative by the New York Photo Festival, is a juried exhibition of contemporary photography that seeks to capture the spirit and essence of Brooklyn, and to showcase the vitality of photography happening in the hottest part of New York right now!

Drawn from submissions received online through August 29, 2010, 80 photographs will be selected and exhibited at The powerHouse Arena in Dumbo, Brooklyn. The show’s official opening will take place during this year’s Dumbo Arts Festival (September 24–26), an event that draws over 150,000 visitors over 3 days – and will remain open until October 15, 2010. In addition, all submissions received by August 29 will be showcased in a slideshow presentation at the powerHouse Arena during the show’s opening weekend.

It is our hope that Capture Brooklyn will not only serve to acknowledge and celebrate the fantastic photography happening in this borough, but also encourage and nurture the growth of Brooklyn’s artistic renaissance.

The Rules:

  • All work submitted for consideration must have been produced after January 1, 2009.
  • Finalists will be notified by September 6 and will need to drop-off their work at The powerHouse Arena no later than September 20, 2010.
  • All work must be dropped-off suitably mounted or framed and ready for hanging, or they will not be included in the show.
  • All work must be clearly labeled with the artist’s name and contact info.
  • All selected photographs must remain on show at The powerHouse Arena for the duration of the exhibition. Substitutions will not be accepted.
  • Artists are responsible for all shipping costs to and from The powerHouse Arena.
  • Artists are responsible for insuring their work. All work will be handled by experienced personnel and the utmost care will be taken to guarantee the safety of the work. However, the New York Photo Festival and The PowerHouse Arena will not be responsible for any loss or damage to the work while on display or in transit.

Entry Fees:

  • Each participating artist may submit 1-3 single images for a fee of $25 or 4-6 single images for a fee of $50.

 

Lens Culture International Exposure Awards: Closed

Lens Culture International Exposure Awards discover, reward, and promote talented, new, emerging and established photographers from around the world.

We’re looking for exciting images from every continent, and from diverse points of view: documentary, fine art, photojournalism, street photography, nature, sports, fashion, poetic, personal, abstract and human.

An international jury of photography experts will review and judge every photo submitted.

This year, in addition to cash awards and other prizes, we’re delighted to announce that all winning photographs will be featured in well-publicized International Exposure Awards traveling exhibitions at galleries in Paris, New York and San Francisco in 2011. (Additional international gallery venues may be announced soon.) The winning photographs will also get prominent, exclusive photo features in Lens Culture, giving them access and broad exposure to an enthusiastic, influential worldwide audience.

Six photographers will win top honors (3 Portfolio Awards, and 3 Single Image Awards). Additionally, 25 photographers (from either category) will win Honorable Mention Awards.

Last year, we received over 6,000 images from photographers in 48 countries on six continents! Many of the 29 winners from 2009 continue to achieve great success with their careers — winning other awards (including two World Press Photo Awards), signing publishing contracts, getting editorial assignments, group and solo exhibitions, artists residencies, and having their work collected by institutions and private collectors around the world.

All levels of emerging and professional photographers are invited to apply for these awards. Two categories of photographs will be judged:

Portfolio Awards

Submit 10 to 15 photographic images that are linked — thematically, aesthetically, as a story, or simply as a range of your photographic talent. Edit your selections carefully, since this category will be judged on the strength of the group of photographs as a whole, and not as individual photographs. Entry fee: $75.

The jury will choose three cash prize winners in this category. Entry fees: $35 per image, or $60 to submit two to five images.

Applicants must submit their photos to us online at: http://lensculture.slideroom.com. After you have uploaded your images and information, you will be asked to pay your submission fee of $75 for the Portfolio category, or $35 (to submit one photo) or $60 (to submit two to five photos) for the Single Image category. For good image quality and fast upload, your image files should be less than 2 MB each, and sized around 1024 x 768 pixels @ 72 ppi. Winners will be announced on October 15, 2010

Prizes will be awarded, and all winning photographs will be exhibited online, prominently, to coincide with Lens Culture’s extra-special Paris Photo Edition in November 2010.

The Jan van Eyck Academie is an institute for research and production where artists, designers and theoreticians work alongside each other.

The JVE has positions available in the Fine Art and Design Departments for the next academic year, starting on 1 January 2011. Artists are invited to submit proposals for individual research projects; designers can apply for one of the projects formulated by the department.

FINE ART
The Fine Art department offers a unique space for experimentation, production, reflection and debate. Researchers conduct their artistic research in an environment that encourages questioning of the assumptions, forms, meanings and contexts that are tied to the practice of making art today. The Fine Art department welcome artists, individuals and groups, without stipulating conditions regarding form, content and media.

Artistic practice is supported by a programme of events and sustained conversations organised by the (advising) researchers. The academy offers expertise in all media and production areas, in-house or in cooperation with partner organisations, and encourages publishing through the Jan van Eyck publication series.

The Fine Art Department is headed by advising researchers Hans-Christian Dany, Imogen Stidworthy and Nasrin Tabatabai & Babak Afrassiabi.

DESIGN
Candidate researchers for the Design Department can apply for one of the following projects:

FORBIDDEN CITY
Strijp-S is an urban development plan that tries to turn the 66-acres of the former Philips factory in Eindhoven from a ‘Forbidden City’ into a ‘ Creative City with an unequalled character’. The project is a visual research into new divisions of labour that emerge as soon as heavy industries and mass-production are replaced by what is coined as cognitive, immaterial or affective labour.

The project calls for designers, urbanists, video- and filmmakers.

*LATENT STARE*
Exploring the practice, methods and messages of type-design, *Latent stare* proposes a gathering and study of selected typefaces and stories, from the 1900s onwards – when technology had accelerated, and begun to affect, the production and distribution of new types. The selected material is affiliated to a political, social or spiritual set of beliefs which feed back into the typefaces creation, design and/or use.

Advising researcher: David Bennewith

NEUTRALITY_Polity and Space in the Post-Eurocentric City
Researches the modalities and substances that contemporary practices of neutrality give rise to and contribute in sustaining. The project will aim at outlining innovative paths towards design agency and creativity and analyses forms of transformation and control of contemporary space.

OPEN VIDEO
HTML5 is supposed to open a new chapter in web design and web-based publishing. Open Video will research into past and present open-source video implementations to develop an independent platform that explores the specific potentials of self-authored and self-managed, open-source video publishing initiatives against the backdrop of the overwhelming dominance of mass-media like content providers.

The project calls for code developers, web designers and digital content producers.

REMOTE SENSING_Biopolitical Imagery
Investigates how new remote-sensing technologies are shaping and carving contemporary spaces of operation and sovereignty, and focuses on the agency that these new technologies elicit and entail. The project singles out a series of contemporary situations and traces the complex links and exchanges between the production of new images through remote sensing and the outline of new legal and governmental issues.

The project calls for data visualisation designers, interaction designers, urbanists, architects, photographers, video and filmmakers.
