January Deadlines & ABoT project (Deadline February 28, 2011)

Don’t miss the Deadlines! You can find them, now sorted by month, on the right hand side, under “Posts by Subject”. For example, the deadlines for January 2011, can be found under Deadline 1/2011. Hurry up, most of them are closing soon…

Here is a new one, still open:

“Artists’ Books on Tour – Artist Competition and Mobile Museum” was launched in June 2010 by the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art (Vienna) with the MGLC – International Centre of Graphic Arts (Ljubljana) and the UPM – Museum of Decorative Arts (Prague). The core activities of the project cover

  • the implementation of a competition among European artists
  • the evaluation of the results by an international jury awarding the best submissions
  • the presentation of selected works in a “Mobile Museum” touring several European cities

For centuries, artists have expressed themselves in the field of books and printing, but adequate recognition and critical acceptance of “Artists’ Books” as a distinct genre only came in the 20th century. The ABoT project promotes contemporary art and artists working in the field with the ambition to raise more public awareness for this genre of art which is, for many artists, a central and important form of practice. We therefore offer artists a platform to share their artists’ books within a unique all-European competition for the first time.

Submissions are accepted as completed physical or digital objects as well as in the form of conceptual designs for projected works.

Outstanding works will be awarded a grant by an international jury.

Past Portfolio Reviews & Hints

Have you checked out our new list of Portfolio Reviews in 2017? Thinking about participating in one of them? Then take a moment to check out these resources.

In case you are have not found the PF Review you were looking for, maybe it has ceased to exist. Double-check with our archived list of PF Reviews (since 2011) and if you think that we have missed our something, let us know (via a comment to this post)! Thank you!

Useful Hints:

Why do double work? There are some quite good documents online giving useful hints on how to prepare yourself and your work for the reviews, what to do and what to avoid. The best and most extensive one I found is the Photolucida Review Festival How-to Guidebook (116KB PDF) filled with great information on how to make the most of portfolio reviews.

Others, that were sent to me by Lenscratch blogger Aline Smithson are: Jen Beckman_Portfolio_tips, Mary Virginia Swanson Reviews Tips, and Aline-Smithson Learning.

The Columbia College Chicago has a whole set of Quick Guides, one of them on Portfolio Reviews, where they even tell you how to dress and how to greet. Maybe a bit over-explicit, but usefull for newbies, I guess.

Better and more extensive: Jasmine DeFoore‘s Portfolio Review Dos and Don’ts.

Many of the above-listed Reviews also give more special tips for their specific venue, on the correspondent web page…

Archived Information on Portfolio Reviews

This is a list of the most important Photography Portfolio Reviews. It was started in 2011. Please visit the information on 2011-2014, as, some of the events are biennial, or do not have information on the 2015 editions yet online. So you may want to check the information in the backup section and extrapolate the new dates and prices….

The Reviews are ordered by date of the event, not the deadline for submission. Some reviews accept submissions until a few days before the event (such as Lodz), others close the call many months before (such as Houston Foto Fest), so please have a close look at that.

The reviews can be very different as for the number of participants, the profiles of the reviewers, the fee and how many reviews you get for it. This last criterion is reflected by the Price/Review Ratio, calculated in Euros, at the current exchange rates.

Generally speaking, Portfolio Reviews in the US are by far more expensive than in Europe and the rest of the world. The reason for this seems to be that they are more established and valued as an important career step there, thus American photographers are willing to pay the price. They might also be more “successful” because American photography professionals come to these reviews explicitly in order to find new talents, to exhibit, publish or even buy works.

Other criteria, which might influence your choice are whether you, the photographer, can choose the reviewers beforehand (unfortunately, this is not always clear from the presentation texts), if there are other perks, such as prizes for the best portfolio, and the total number of other participants.

Please leave a comment if you know of a Review that is not mentioned, find a mistake or simply like the article.

Filter Photo’s mission is two-fold: first, to serve and support the photographic communities of Chicago and the Midwest; and second, to highlight Chicago as a vital center of the national photographic community.

Since 2009 Filter Photo has organized the annual Filter Photo Festival, a multiday celebration of photography that includes workshops, lectures, exhibition receptions, artist talks, and other diverse programming. A primary component of the Festival is the portfolio reviews, through which photographers are able to connect with national and international curators, gallery directors, editors, and other elite professionals. The 2015 Filter Photo Festival will take place from September 24th-27th, and will be primarily based in the historic Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel.

In 2015 Filter Photo opened Filter Space, a permanent gallery and project space located in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood at 1821 West Hubbard Street, Suite 207. Filter Space hosts regular social, educational, and professional development activities, including exhibitions, workshops, and lectures.

In the Portfolio Review, participants sign up for twenty-minute face-to-face reviews and receive candid advice about their work, as well as information on getting their photographs exhibited and published. We are thrilled to have so many of our attendees walk away with connections that have led them to publishing their work, gallery shows, online exhibitions and the indispensable opportunity to network with their peers.

All Filter attendees receiving blocks of 5 or 8 portfolio reviews are encouraged to sign up for our annual Portfolio Walk, where Filter VIPs will roam the room and the general public is invited to vote for their favorite portfolio for the 2016 Festival Portfolio Walk’s People’s Choice Award.

Young Portfolio 2011 (Japan). Call for Entries: April 1 – 30, 2011

The Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (K*MoPA) invites all young photographers (under 35) to send original works. From the several thousand works that arrive each year, approx. 300 works are bought for the collection.
This invitation is not a call to a contest where pieces are judged, then ranked. Rather, it is the Museum’s wish to collect works by young and emerging photographers for its permanent collection.  We believe that there is no clearer signal or a more direct means of support for the young photographer than the purchase of their work for a permanent museum collection. This is why the Museum acquires work by those promise to be our future photographic visionaries.
We look forward to receiving unique images showcasing the creativity of younger artists in the field of photography.

The 2011 selection committee is
Hiroh KIKAI, Kyoichi TSUZUKI, Eikoh HOSOE (Director of the Museum)

Video Talk: Thomas Sevcik: Why Art and the Creative Class will Never Save Cities

Art Salon | Urbanism | Why Art and the Creative Class will Never Save Cities from Art Basel on Vimeo.

Art Basel Miami Beach, North America’s premiere haute art fair, where you can pass a Picasso on your right while sneaking a glance at an A-list celebrity to your left, is not often a place where serious critiques of the art world arise. And yet, at this year’s fair, Thomas Sevcik, managing director of Arthesia, (a think tank that consults large institutions on cultural positioning and strategies), gave an important and provocatively titled talk — “Why Art and the Creative Class Will Never Save Cities” – taking on the so-called “Bilbao Effect” and the dubious benefits a city gains when rebranding itself as a cultural capital to attract “creative types,” in the hope that innovation and economic power will naturally follow.
