The WRO Media Art Biennale is the leading international forum for new media art in Poland and Central Europe. Since its inception in 1989, WRO has been presenting art forms created using new media for artistic expression and communication, exploring current creative territories and building a critical perspective toward emerging issues in art and society.

Over the years, the WRO Biennales have raised a variety of questions about creative approaches to new technologies and the expanding technosphere of social media—about the creative crossover realms that arise where art and science, economics and social activism intersect.

The theme of the 14th WRO Biennale, which starts on May 10th 2011, is ALTERNATIVE NOW, highlighting the roles of individual artistic stances and strategies that keep a deliberate distance from the institutionalized mechanisms and standardized expectations of the art world.

METROPOLIS – City Life in the Urban Age
“On May 23, 2007 the world celebrated the beginning of the urban millennium. It was on this date that, worldwide, for the first time in history more people lived in cities than in the countryside: 3.3 billion people, on 3 percent of the earth’s surface. This development has far-reaching implications. Is a decent, humane life possible in a modern megalopolis that is bursting at its seams? And how can the countryside survive the economic, demographic, cultural and ecological clear-fell that urbanisation brings with it?”

The main exhibition at Noorderlicht 2011, METROPOLIS, City Life in the Urban Age, deals with the role of the city as the nerve centre of modern global society.

It is the second part of a diptych, a follow-up to the 2010 theme LAND, Country Life in the Urban Age, which looked at the shrinking role of the countryside worldwide.

The city, as a phenomenon, has an almost schizophrenic character; its many personalities are constantly encountering one another. It is our intention that these multiple personalities will emerge in the structure of the exhibition, running the gamut from utopia to dystopia.
Call for submissions

Noorderlicht calls on photographers, curators and photo agencies to submit work for METROPOLIS, City Life in the Urban Age.

We are looking for photo series that present a distinctive, even idiosyncratic vision on the character of the modern city. Economic, social or urban planning aspects can each play a role; the series may be literal or metaphorical. We are striving for a global picture; the group exhibition as a whole will be a journey through cities in all parts of the world.

The precise sub-themes will be set out in a following stage of the project. We would list several possibilities as examples:

* Symphony: The city as the effervescent economic and social nerve centre of modern society, a place for progress, interaction and infinite possibilities;
* Mutability: Space that is the product of urban planning, with architectonic dreams of the good life for all the city’s inhabitants; from old ideals of equality to modern technology and sustainability;
* Expansion: The urge for unbridled expansion in the name of progress, creating new chances but also pushing the old into oblivion; a place of migration, on the way to a better future, even if that means a life in the chaos of the slums;
* Seduction: Where massive economic differences exist and everyone is seduced by a mass media landscape to seek greater wealth, where millionaires live next to the homeless;
* Fear: Places where the individual can be swamped in a mass of strangers; where the demands of the rat race for success stand in the way of authentic living; where criminality lurks, security demands control and Big Brother is always watching;
* Home: Small societies, seeking a place of one’s own in the large, anonymous world around one, or the excessive separation from that wider world; the creation of suburbs where affluent urban life can again appear rural; the shift of the social environment from the real to the virtual world.

Submissions can be sent to Noorderlicht between now and 31 March, 2011. Tips from colleagues are also very welcome. Do not however wait too long; the curatorial process begins as soon as work comes in.

Artists are invited to submit proposals for a luminous artwork

The contemporary art funds of the city and canton of Geneva (FCAC and Fmac) are innovating in the sphere of public art by commissioning luminous artworks to be displayed for a ten-year period. The project already boasts six installations, by Sylvie Fleury, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Nic Hess, Christian Jankowski, Jérôme Leuba and Sislej Xhafa. Two additional luminous works, along with an exhibition, symposium, and publication, are scheduled for March 2012.

Neons was conceived by curator Simon Lamunière specifically for the Plaine de Plainpalais in downtown Geneva, Switzerland. In this sense Neons is a public art project in the form of an exhibition at city scale. The diamond shape of Plainpalais echoes the city’s waterfront. As distinct from the glamorous tourist district of the waterfront, the Plaine offers an original urban environment that combines local and business activities with seasonal, cultural, and festive events.

This competition is open to artists of all nationalities.
It concerns the roof of the building located at 4 avenue Henri-Dunant, Geneva, Switzerland.

Artists wishing to enter the contest must first register by downloading application documents found on the site Forms must be completed and returned no later than January 31, 2011. Completed proposals must reach the organizers no later than Tuesday, March 1, 2011. The jury composed of professionals from the contemporary art scene will select the winning proposal, which will be installed in March 2012.

In 2011, Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain will host the next edition of project room @ aquarium, an artist-in-residency programme based in the so-called “Aquarium”, a 175 sqm steel and glass pavilion. This international residency programme, while welcoming proposals taking full advantage of the place’s very specific architecture, is encouraging applications aiming to stimulate exchange and debate in relation with the local context and socio-cultural issues in Luxembourg.

project room @ aquarium forms an integral part of the Casino Luxembourg’s agenda of exhibitions and events. Furthermore to the work that the participants are asked to realise during their stay in Luxembourg, they are expected to participate in the activities of Casino Luxembourg on specific occasions to be defined with the Casino team. Their project will be exhibited over a period of two months at the end of the residency and documented in a publication.


The residency is open to all individuals or artists’ collectives wishing to develop their practice in a professional context by creating new work. Applicants are free to choose their means of artistic expression but must give documented proof of at least three years’ work and exhibition practice and not be older than 40 years. In order to facilitate communication with the local scene, participants should be fluent in either English, French or German. All applicants must hold a valid visa for the duration of the residency.

Selection procedure

A jury of experts will select the candidates for the two residencies to be held in 2011 based on the quality of work and the applicants’ potential to use the residency to maximum benefit. The selected candidates will be informed of the jury results via email at the end of February 2011.


The 2010/2011 years’ jury members are Jean-Jacques Dumont, artist and professor, École supérieure d’art Metz Métropole (ESAMM) and École Supérieure des Arts décoratifs de Strasbourg (ÉSADS); Berit Fischer, freelance curator, Berlin; Emmanuel Lambion, freelance curator and art worker / Bn Projects, Brussels; Kevin Muhlen, artistic director, Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain; Christine Walentiny, exhibitions manager and project coordinator, Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain.


Casino Luxembourg will provide financial and technical support and will be in charge of implementing the artist’s project to a maximum cost of EUR 10,000. Participants will be accommodated in a centrally located, self-sufficient flat at Centre Culturel de Rencontres Abbaye de Neumünster in Luxembourg city. Casino Luxembourg will take over the artist’s travel costs to and from Luxemburg and will provide a bulk sum of EUR 1,800 toward general expenses, to be paid in four instalments, the first of which will be made upon arrival. At the end of the residency, participants will receive an artist fee of EUR 1,500.

Please include a maximum of 3 images per project. If you wish to send a film, please do this via (not more than 3 films in total will be considered!)

5) Letter of intent (350 words maximum)
including a brief description of your motivation and of what you will be working on contentwise
while being in Luxembourg. No final project for the space is required at this stage, but an outline of your intentions has to be clearly stated in your letter.

2011-2012 Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship at the New-York Historical Society

The New-York Historical Society invites qualified applicants who are
within 3-5 years of having received the Ph.D. to apply for one of two
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowships for research and writing in any
field relevant to the Society’s library and museum collections.
Awardees are expected to be in residence for the academic year
commencing on September 1, 2011, and carry an academic year stipend of
$60,000. The deadline for applications is January 12, 2011, with
decisions to be announced by March 15, 2011.

institutional affiliation and rank, mailing and e-mail addresses,
telephone and fax numbers, and title of project; a two to three page
description of project, including resources to be used; a curriculum

Fellows Program

The Bernard and Irene Schwartz Postdoctoral Fellows Program was
established in 2005 to foster a vibrant relation between the New-York
Historical Society and The New School’s Eugene Lang College.
Post-doctoral Fellows are invited to help build this connection through
research, teaching, and public history programming. In the course of a
one-year (non-renewable) fellowship, Bernard and Irene Schwartz fellows
are expected to develop a major research project with the resources of
the New-York Historical Society, to teach two undergraduate courses at
Eugene Lang College, and to share in both institutions’ commitments to
public history.

The successful candidate will be a recent Ph.D. (within past three
years of starting date), with a strong record of previous teaching (as
a TA or otherwise). Candidates must submit a 2-3 page proposal,
describing the theme of the major research project the fellow will
undertake, and stating specifically why the resources of the New-York
Historical Society are critical to the project. Candidates must also
submit a C.V., two letters of recommendation (which may be sent
directly), a short writing sample, and two detailed syllabi outlining
the undergraduate courses they envision teaching at the New School’s
Eugene Lang College. While all areas of American history will be
considered, the College has a particular interest in imaginative
approaches to the teaching of U.S. history, in topical courses which
address, for example, intellectual history, material culture as
history, America in the Age of Revolutions, slavery and its
consequences, patterns of leisure and consumption, urban history, and
history of communication.

The fellowship requires residency in New York for the academic year,
September 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012. Fellows will receive $60,000 plus
