Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber

The IED Madrid and EMAHO Magazine, in collaboration with Guardian Garden Gallery, launch an intensive four-day workshop with Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieberwhich will take place from April 5 to 8 in Tokyo, Japan.

Katja and Olivier will look at very different forms of publications, contemporary positions as well as introduce various ideas of research and visual strategies.

After an introduction of their own work and their curatorial approach to ANT!FOTO and the ANT!FOTO Manifiesto, different aspects of photographic concepts, different thoughts to photography and ideas of cooperating and collaborating will be discussed with all participants. Views on photography from an european and japanese perspective will be examined and discussed.

In particular the participants are asked to introduce their work to Katja and Oliver (and the other workshop participants). Together they will explore and debate the concepts, develop strategies of presentation or publication of each work and will seek for possibilities how to realize these photographic works. The last evening will be filled with discussing photography during a »居酒屋が並んでいる Izakaya get-together«.

Behind ‚Böhm/Kobayashi‘ lurk the duo Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber, who together cover an extensive range of personas: photographers and artists, curators and exhibition organizers, designers and art book editors. Yet as they move through their photographic cosmos, it is not always so easy to determine where one identity ends and the other begins.[…] Regardless, in their works and activities as artists and art facilitators they have long since become moderators of a very specific photographic culture.

Call for artists to paint storm drains in Rockville, USA. Deadline: March 27 (Updated)

This is an unusual Call, and I had to look up Wikipedia to confirm my doubts. Yes, a storm drain, or storm sewer (as they are called in the US), is what the Aussies call stormwater drain and the Brits call it drainage well system (UK) or simply a drain or drain system. That is, a piece of metal over a hole in the ground, designed to drain excess rain and ground water from paved streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and roofs.

Now, this is what the people of Rockville, Maryland, want to have painted…

Let’s see who is up for it.

Best wishes, Moritz

PS: If you want to see a witty photography project on drains, check out Juan de Santos’ project Palabras que guardan abismos…

Call for Artists
The City of Rockville and VisArts are excited to present the “Rockville Storm Drain Mural Project” to the local community in celebration of the 45th Anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2015. This project uses the power and joy of art to educate the public about storm drains and the impact of our collective actions on local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay. This project gives the artistic community an opportunity to express themselves via a small-scale outdoor storm drain mural in a City of Rockville neighborhood.

What Are We Looking For?
We are looking for original artwork that raises awareness about the impact we all have on local streams, rivers and the Bay. Your mural design should reflect topics related to storm drains and the health of local waterways, but feel free to be creative with interpretations of the subject matter. Examples topics include water quality, streams, rivers, the Chesapeake Bay, native plants and wildlife, or pollution. Keep in mind that communicating a message is central to this project. Proposed ideas should be tasteful, positive and appropriate for all people in the community. Please include the storm drain in your submission drawing so we can accurately see how the work engages with the site. We are asking artists to submit their ideas with the attached application form.

Time Line:
•       February 4 – Artists may apply online through Submittable.com application
•       March 27 – Deadline for submissions.
•       April 3 – Mural artists selected by jury committee.
•       April 6 – Artists notified.
•       April 8 through April 30 – Painting of storm drains.
•       May – Community walking tour.

To Apply:
If you are interested in applying to be a part of this project and lending your time and talent, please apply online:
Or send all required application materials via snail mail to: Susan Main, VisArts, 155 Gibbs Street, Rockville, MD 20850.

POPCAP ABOUT

POPCAP, the piclet.org prize for contemporary African Photography is being held for the fourth time
in 2015. It is directed at photographers whose work engages with the African continent and/or its diaspora. The prize consists of global exposure at major international photography exhibitions.

POPCAP aims to raise the profile of African photography within the arts. Each year five winners are selected by an internationally-sourced panel of judges, enabling the promotion of African photography worldwide and helping to avoid geographically and culturally one-sided views of the portfolios. Due to its extensive application in a day-to-day context, we consider photography to be the ideal medium through which to foster an unhindered exchange of ideas about the image of Africa.

POPCAP was initiated by Benjamin Füglister in 2012 and has since been offered annually.

POPCAP PARTNERS

POPCAP is a grassroots organisation. We collaborate with a variety of partners in order to execute the POPCAP prize, exhibitions, workshops, talks and publications. We are happy to have received such good feedback regarding the 2012, 2013 and 2014 editions, which has enabled us to continue to foster relationships with both the old and new partners. If you are interested in joining our team of partners please contact us at partners@popcap.cc.
