August Sander Award. Prize for Portrait Photography

The August Sander Award – Prize for Portrait Photography, sponsored by Ulla Bartenbach and Prof. Dr. Kurt Bartenbach in collaboration with Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne will be awarded for the second time in 2020.

The prize is designed to promote young artists working in the field of documentary and conceptual photography. In honor of August Sander’s seminal contribution to portrait photography, the candidates’ photographic work should primarily focus on portraiture. The prize is awarded every two years.

National and international artists aged 40 and under who work mainly with photography are eligible to enter. The prize is endowed with €5,000. Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur will also organize, if possible, a solo exhibition of the winners’ works in cooperation with the artist.

The artist should submit a largely completed series of no more than 20 photographs. Only works that form a thematically coherent group or sequence will be reviewed; individual images will not be considered. Submitted works must not have won prizes at other competitions.

The jury is composed of five members: Rineke Dijkstra, artist, Amsterdam; Douglas Eklund, curator, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Prof. Dr. Ursula Frohne, art historian, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, Münster; Dr. Anja Bartenbach, sponsor family; Gabriele Conrath-Scholl, director, Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne.

A shortlist will be published at the end of March 2020. The winner will be announced at the end of April 2020. The award ceremony will take place in September 2020 on the premises of Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne. The closing date is 24 January 2020. For the 7th edition of the Tokyo International Photography Competition, we invite photographers around the world to submit their photographs addressing the causes and effects of   that threaten both our planet and the human race. 

Over 85% of wetlands have been lost. Roughly half of the world’s coral is gone. At least 75 million acres of primary or recovering forest areas have been destroyed in the last ten years.

Rising sea levels, superstorms, melting polar ice, disappearing islands, wildfires…the list goes on. It is undeniable that the earth is changing rapidly as human population and consumption continue to grow. Today, with the threats of human-induced climate change comes a time for conversation and a need for transformative changes.

We need to talk about change now, and the first steps we take to slow down the environment costs – starting with everyone agreeing that climate change is very much a real and imminent threat.

PRODUCTION RESIDENCY IN SCANDINAVIA. Deadline: Jan. 12, 2020

PRODUCTION RESIDENCY AT THE TOP OF SCANDINAVIA
Welcome to Luleå, a city close to the Arctic Circle in the north of Sweden. Our open call program for 2020 is a 2-step residency.
Our residency program is a production based one. We like to give the selected artist the opportunity to work in our many workshops, fully equipped with machineries and tools.
The artist will be invited for a week in March 2020 to do research and get to know us at KKV Luleå (Artist Collective Studio), as well as artists, art institutions and the area we live in. KKV will arrange activities and meetings in the art and cultural context during the stay.
The second part of the residency is two months, between 28th of April and 18th of June. The artist will work independently according to one’s needs and interests. Before the second part of the residency, the artist has to send in a sketch of work plan, his/her needs in terms of workshops, machinery, tools etc. The artist also has to make sure the work material will be in place before coming back in April.
During the stay, we like the artist to present his/her previous work during an ‘artist get-to-gather’.
KKV Luleå is part of Swedish Lapland AiR network with residencies in the north of Sweden. Study visits to partners involved within the network are also possible. Read more about the network at http://www.swedishlaplandair.com
The residency program will provide the artist with:
A grant of 20 000 SEK (SEK- Swedish kronor)
Travel up to 10 000 SEK
Material up to 5 000 SEK
Transportation of work up to 2 000 SEK
Accommodation in private apartment is included
NOTE: the artist will be responsible for the piece(s) produced during the residency, which has to be transported away. No art pieces nor objects will be left at KKV at the end of the residency program.
Accommodation
A 30 square meters-private apartment in the center of Luleå. It’s possible to have two guests in the apartment.
About us
KKV is an Artist Collective Studio (KKV stands for “Konstnärernas Kollektiv Verkstad”) based in Luleå. Among the 21 artistic collective workshops in Sweden, KKV Luleå is one of the largest with very well equipped creative labs.
Our workshops are fully equipped with machineries and tools: graphic, screen printing, silk screen printing/serigraphy labs, ImageON (light box), enamel, sculpture (plaster, concrete, wax, stone, ceramic), wood, metal castings (bronze, aluminum), monumental spaces, digital art, and sewing/embroidery machine.
Criteria for applicants
Professional artists with minimum 2 years work experience.
Be 30 year or older.
Live in Europe (we do not accept applications from Swedish Artists on this occasion)
Not be enrolled in educational institution during the program period. EXCEPTION: those who are in Ph.D. program are eligible.
Be in a state of good health and able to carry out daily activities on his/her own.
Have enough English to communicate with other artists and studio staff.

MACK First Book Award. Deadline: Jan 20, 2020

The MACK First Book Award is a publishing prize open to artists who have not previously had a book published. The award was established in 2012 to support emerging artists and bodies of work that find a voice through the book form.

The call for submissions emphasises a predilection for projects intended for book form: visual art projects that find a voice through the book. Submissions can include texts, collage and experimental approaches to book-making.

We are looking for unique work of high quality and encourage artists of all ages and nationalities to submit their book projects.

Submission Guidelines

  • Entries are only accepted from artists who have not previously had a book published.

  • All submissions must either be unpublished or self-published book projects. Books that have already been published by a third party publishing house will not be considered.

  • Submissions must consist of coherent book projects and not portfolios of images in book form.

  • All submissions must be received as printed book dummies. Digital submissions in the form of PDFs, ebooks or apps will not be considered.

  • Any text within the book must be supplied with an English translation.

Submissions must be received between 11 November 2019 – 20 January 2020. Entries received before or after these dates will not be considered for the prize.

  • Please include your name and project title along with your book dummy.

  • If submitting more than one project, please complete separate forms for each entry.

Returns

Submissions will be available for return in March 2020, after the shortlist has been announced.

  • The postage label expires after 1 working day, so please be sure to email us the label immediately after it has been generated.
