We continue our workshop program of IED-Madrid with Joan Villaplana, at the Central Studios in Shanghai, on March 21 and 22, 2016.
CONCEPT
The more the new technologies get in our life, the more we relate with reality through images. Today, an important part of the knowledge we obtain comes from photographs. But, does Photography really provide knowledge through its visual language? What kind of reality does Photography create, or rather, recreate? Are we moving away from reality, or are the images our new reality?
As images are playing an ever more important role in our daily life, it seems an urgent matter to revisit, and to rethink existing relations between Photography and Knowledge.
This workshop proposes to discuss about existing relations between the photographer’s (artist’s) point of view and the reality of the spectator: What is the role of the photographic medium in this encounter between the image-maker and the observer?
During the first day, participants will learn about the abstract and controversial idea of “reality” and about how new technologies have managed to re-shape this concept, once and for all.
The second day will be used for a more profound immersion into the subject of reality and knowledge in photography. Using a wide selection of works from contemporary Western photographers as examples and embodiments, the workshop will update classical theories about photography and truth. New approaches towards a more suitable theory of photography aesthetics will be presented and discussed.
