This is an unusual Call, and I had to look up Wikipedia to confirm my doubts. Yes, a storm drain, or storm sewer (as they are called in the US), is what the Aussies call stormwater drain and the Brits call it drainage well system (UK) or simply a drain or drain system. That is, a piece of metal over a hole in the ground, designed to drain excess rain and ground water from paved streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and roofs.
Now, this is what the people of Rockville, Maryland, want to have painted…
Let’s see who is up for it.
Best wishes, Moritz

Call for Artists
The City of Rockville and VisArts are excited to present the “Rockville Storm Drain Mural Project” to the local community in celebration of the 45th Anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2015. This project uses the power and joy of art to educate the public about storm drains and the impact of our collective actions on local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay. This project gives the artistic community an opportunity to express themselves via a small-scale outdoor storm drain mural in a City of Rockville neighborhood.
What Are We Looking For?
We are looking for original artwork that raises awareness about the impact we all have on local streams, rivers and the Bay. Your mural design should reflect topics related to storm drains and the health of local waterways, but feel free to be creative with interpretations of the subject matter. Examples topics include water quality, streams, rivers, the Chesapeake Bay, native plants and wildlife, or pollution. Keep in mind that communicating a message is central to this project. Proposed ideas should be tasteful, positive and appropriate for all people in the community. Please include the storm drain in your submission drawing so we can accurately see how the work engages with the site. We are asking artists to submit their ideas with the attached application form.
Time Line:
• February 4 – Artists may apply online through Submittable.com application
• March 27 – Deadline for submissions.
• April 3 – Mural artists selected by jury committee.
• April 6 – Artists notified.
• April 8 through April 30 – Painting of storm drains.
