Call for Curatorial Residents 2013-14, in Canada. Deadline: Feb 24, 2013

221A is an artist-run centre located in Vancouver, Canada with a mandate to support the advancement of contemporary art that explores design as a subject. Projects presented at 221A address design in its widest sense, which may encompass graphics, products, architecture, or, more broadly, social codes and conventions.

221A is seeking proposals from curators for projects to commence in 2014. Implemented in 2010 the Curatorial Residencies program encourages a diversity of curatorial approaches to the organization’s mandate. Emerging and professional curators, curatorial collectives, which may include recent graduates and practicing artists, designers and architects, are encouraged to submit proposals to be developed over the course of one year. Projects may include exhibitions, performances, publications, talks or workshops. Proposals should discuss a viewpoint, theory or approach that the project hopes to foster in relation to the organization’s mandate.

Selected candidates will be expected to work with the Executive Director to research, plan and execute the project. In addition, selected curators are required to participate in the Curatorial Committee, starting mid 2013 for a minimum one-year term (meeting every 2 months) to offer feedback to other curatorial residents and the program. The committee offers a space for reflection on the wider program at 221A and a relationship between curatorial residents, staff and community. International participants will be expected to attend meetings through online voice/video chat.

Proposal Guidelines
Applicants must submit a digital proposal (to bchhay@221a.ca) including:
• a one to two-page project proposal, describing the curatorial project;
• a current CV of each of the key contributors (maximum 3 pages each);
• related images/texts as required (pdf or jpegs, max. 15 images, or up to 10 min. of audio or video). For large format images or videos that cannot be transmitted by email please include instructions for access.

Proposals are intended to provide the overall intention and background of the project. Applicants proposing self-curated projects must describe the reasoning behind this approach. Further research and development of the project is expected upon selection.

Selections Process
Project proposals are shortlisted by a committee comprised of members of the Board of Directors and the Executive Director. The Executive Director makes final selections of 5 proposals to make up the 2014 programming year. Selected applicants will be contacted in March 2013. Please note that only applicants under consideration will be contacted.

Funding
221A is a non-profit organization funded through a mixture of self-generated income, private donations and public funding. All projects are funded through the organization’s operating budget at $4,000. This budget may increase through the success of project-based grants-with average projects ranging up to $25,000. All projects must pay fees to artists and curators at the minimum CARFAC rates or higher.

Call for Entries: Photographic-based work in various formats. Deadline: Feb 17, 2013

Artists based in the Northwest of the US are invited to submit work for ‘OFF THE PLAIN: Contemporary NW Photography‘ curated by TJ Norris for Place.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: February 17th (11:59PM PST – no late entries)
EXHIBITION: April 16 – June 1, 2013
ENTRY FEE: $10, Up to 6 images per artist
(fee used for any associated printed material)

WHAT: Seeking contemporary photographic-based work in various formats, other than traditional 2D. Individual artists, duos or teams are welcome to submit.

DESCRIPTION:

‘Off the Plain’ will feature up to a dozen Northwest-based contemporary artists who have developed photographic works that stretch beyond traditional two-dimensional formats.

As an examination of the great Northwest as a physical location for exploration and experimentation, this show will offer work that is outside the norm, peeling back one thin layer of what is happening right now in this vast elusive and beautiful region. By offering camera-based work that is beyond 2D, audiences will experience a greater appreciation for the photographic arts.

The exhibition will open in April 2013 which is Photography Month in Portland, OR (also see: Photolucida). In this call for entries we wish to review works that utilize and play on space, form and dimension. These may include: sculptural work, assemblage, 3D imaging, installation, kinetic work, multi-paneled pieces, book arts, lightboxes, tableaux, holography/lenticular, moving images or projections (the gallery is equipped with a single projector – if you are submitting video-based work you may use one of your six images as a link to a video, under 10 minutes in length preferred), and the like. The work must be primarily photographic in nature and somehow inform or activate a sense of space. Up to a dozen artists will be selected from this call for entries who focus on mass, volume and change/shift in their photographic work.

The artists in this show command the ability to forgo the generic conventions of the medium. Subject matter will vary from abstraction to conceptual to narrative, though each artist included will be represented by up to five pieces each (depending on scale and context) in the sizable exhibition space – all created within the past three years. The public will be invited to a round table discussion about the “geometric ergonomics of photography in the 21st century” – artists from the exhibition will be selected to participate. If funds are available a printed brochure or catalogue will also be available. A larger built-in international audience of photographic-based professionals will be in Portland to participate in Photolucida’s events, and this will become a focal part of this biennial fair. Partial funding graciously provided by the Regional Arts & Culture Council.

Meet the new bloggers of “Still Searching”, run by Winterthur Fotomuseum.

Martin Jaeggi will run the blog, until February 28, together with Elisabeth Lebovici and Carol Yinghua Lu.

The new bloggers of “Still Searching” will be Martin Jaeggi (*1969), an independent writer and curator who teaches at the photography department of the Zurich University of the Arts, together with co-Blogger Elisabeth Lebovici (*1953), an art historian and critic who participates in the newly founded research group Travelling Féministe, and Carol Yinghua Lu (*1977), a curator/art critic living and working in Beijing, who is  a contributing editor for frieze.

The blog was launched a year ago by German photo historian and theorist Bernd Stiegler, and has counted on contributoers such as the Indian writer Aveek Sen, US artist Walead Beshty, Belgian photo theorist Hilde Van Gelder (one of my personal favourites)  and Geoffrey Batchen, the photo historian and theorist currently working in New Zealand.

According to its makers, Still Searching is aimed at “anyone interested in photography and visual theory. This includes, but is not limited to, academics and professionals”. So have a look.
