In the contest for the scholarships for the European Master of Fine Art Photography in Madrid, the result was a clear triumph for Russia.
FIRST PRIZE: Nikita Pirogov (Russia)
SECOND PRIZE: Alena Zhandarova (Russia)
and THIRD PRIZE: Wawi Navarroza (The Philippines)
The jury was formed by the photographer Javier Vallhonrat, the curator Alejandro Castellote, the director of the Master program (myself) and its coordinator, Pablo Alemán. The decision was not easy as many interesting projects had been entered, in total over 200 from nearly all continents.
The jury finally decided for Nikita’s fresh and poetic approach to photography and video, Alena’s thoughtful self-portraits and Wawi’s reflections about social identities, which will form the core of her new project, “Land, untitled”, to be developed in the course of the Master program in Madrid.
The docents of the European Master of Fine Art Photography include heavy-weights of photography, such as Martin Parr, Javier Vallhonrat, Beat Streuli, Joan Fontcuberta and Elger Esser, as well as internationally recognized artists like Andreas Müller-Pohle, Sean Hillen, Francesco Jodice and Dinu Li, complemented by curators such as Jean-François Chevrier, Horacio Fernández, Alejandro Castellote, Irina Tchmyreva, Alexander Streitberger and Timothy Prus.
The course starts April 27, 2011. Application is still open.
