Eligibility
Applicants must have been born after January 1, 1978 (i.e., must not be above 35 years of age); applications from photographers and artists who work in the medium of photography, regardless of gender, nationality or professional or amateur status, are welcome.

Application Period
Period for application via the Website and for receipt of submissions April 15 – May 15, 2013

Rules and Conditions
1. Submissions on CDs or other digital recording media will not be accepted. All submissions must be in the form of prints.
2. Previous publication of an image will not be a cause for disqualification.
3. Any theme or technique is acceptable. The images must, however, be of archival quality both in technique and materials, since they will become part of the Museum’s permanent collection.
4. Each applicant may submit up to 50 images, whether single-image or multi-image works.
5. An applicant who has submitted work for previous years’ Young Portfolio is welcome to apply again, as long as the applicant is not above 35 years of age; previous selection of a work for purchase for the Young Portfolio collection will not be a cause for disqualification.

Submitting prints
1. Works must be 20 cm x 25 cm or larger but no larger than 1 meter on either dimension.
2. If the print you are submitting is not in the size planned for the finished print, please include a note indicating the intended finished print size. If the Museum decides to acquire that image, the photographer must bear the cost of producing and shipping a print of the intended size. Bear in mind, however, that the selection committee will be basing its decision on the print submitted, including its size and quality.
3. If the Museum decides to acquire an image for which an ink-jet print of unsatisfactory permanence has been submitted, the photographer must then provide an archival quality color print, using pigment-based inks, suitable for long-term conservation. The cost of producing and shipping the new print is borne by the photographer.
4. Prints in black and white must be printed on fiber-based paper and processed for long-term conservation. Submissions for selection, however, may be RC paper prints; if the Museum decides to acquire an image on RC paper, the photographer must provide a print on fiber-based paper and processed for long-term conservation. The cost of producing and shipping the new print is borne by the photographer.
5. Works must be signed, either on the face or on the back. Use a pencil for prints on fiber-based photographic paper and a Stabilo pencil or other pencil that can write on plastic for prints on plastic-based photographic paper.
6. Each print should be placed a separate transparent polypropylene or other plastic envelope; the entry form for each print should be attached with adhesive tape to the back of the envelope. Do not place more than one print in an envelope.
7. Works that are panel mounted, framed, or mounted on mat board are not acceptable.

The Selection Committee
Selection will be made by a selection committee appointed by the Museum. The 2013 selection committee members are Kikuji KAWADA, Masato SETO and Eikoh HOSOE (Director of the Museum).

Prices
Selected works will be purchased by the Museum at prices from JPY30,000 to JPY100,000 per work. In the case of multi-image works, the selection committee may, at its discretion, choose to purchase only some of the images. Photographers (copyright holders) whose work is selected for acquisition will be requested to sign the purchase agreement prescribed by the Museum.

Exhibition
The “Young Portfolio Acquisitions 2013” exhibition is scheduled to open in March, 2014, at the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts.

Application Fee
< For applications from Japan>
The application fee is JPY2,000 for applicants submitting one to 30 prints; for applicants submitting 31 to 50 prints, the application fee is JPY3,000.
< For applications from other countries>
The application fee is US$15 regardless of the number of prints submitted.

Post-medium Condition of Moving Image
Osaka, Kansai University, June 29 - 30, 2013
Deadline: May 17, 2013

The Program Committee of the Association for Studies of Culture and
Representation invites proposal submissions for an interdisciplinary
panel titled “Post-medium Conditions of Moving Image.” The panel will
be held at the 8th Annual Meeting on June 29–30, 2013 at Kansai
University, Osaka, Japan. Submissions must be 20-minute presentations
that cover the theoretical and historical issues of moving image from
various disciplines and methodologies.

In A Voyage on the North Sea: Art in the Age of Post-medium Condition
(1999) and other writings, Rosalind Krauss proposed the idea of
“post-medium condition” in order to describe a series of artworks after
modernism that seek to reinvent medium in their own new ways. Although
Krauss’ critical interest lies in seeking for alternative critical
terminology against Clement Greenberg’s understanding of modernism as a
tendency toward medium specificity, the idea of “post-medium” can have
a broader scope than that of her own intention. Especially, it is
helpful to rethink the current state of moving image, now that the
medium of moving image cannot be attributed to a specific technological
condition; this is clear when considering the current state of
so-called “film,” which is not about the celluloid film as its material
support. As such, we invite contributions that address this post-medium
condition of moving image: its diverse variety of medium, from YouTube
and smartphone screen to 3D movie and gigantic urban screens; its
simultaneous complicated technology and cheap availability; and also
the counterpart of this social diffusion of moving image in practices
of contemporary art and other cultural representations.

While our interest lies in the contemporary situation and discourses of
moving image, we welcome a wide range of topics across media, genres,
historical periods and geographical locations in order to produce a
locus for critical dialogue. Possible topics include but are not
limited to:

Digital/analog
Immersive experience and sensory dimension of moving image
Archive and conservation of moving image
Historical background in the 19th century
Video art, media art and wide use of moving image in contemporary art
Meta-narrative expression of post-medium conditions in film and
other narrative-based genres
Moving image in performing arts and other genres of cultural
production
Tension between still and moving images
Confrontation between cinema and photography
Moving image in cityscape
Amateur practices of moving image
Surveillance and moving images
Possibility of theorization from practices in Japan and other Asian
countries

Please submit your proposal by email to conference@repre.org
Your submission email should include the following:

1) Your name
2) The title of your paper
3) A 200–250 word abstract
4) Your institutional affiliation and position
5) A brief Bio (limited to 50 words)
6) Your contact information (email address, phone number and physical
address)

The deadline for proposal submissions is May 17, 2013.

About the Conference:

As part of the 8th Annual Meeting, we will hold a symposium on
contemporary art and moving image. The symposium will include Akira
Mizuta Lippit, Sakamoto Hirofumi and Takehisa Yu as featured speakers.

2013 Individual Photographer’s Fellowship

Grant Information and Application Guidelines

Application Period: March 1 – May 24, 2013
Application Deadline: May 24, 2013 at 11:59 pm Mountain Time

General Information and Eligibility Requirements

The Aaron Siskind Foundation is offering a limited number of Individual Photographer’s Fellowship grants of up to $10,000 each, for artists working in photography and photo-based art. Recipients will be determined by a panel of distinguished guest judges on the basis of artistic excellence, accomplishment to date, and the promise of future achievement in the medium in its widest sense. The Foundation seeks to support artists/photographers who demonstrate a serious commitment to the field, who are professionally active or employed in the field. The entry fee for this grant is $10USD.

Applications must be submitted through the CaFE application system at www.CallForEntry.org.

Who May Apply: U.S. Citizens and Legal Permanent Residents of the United States, who reside in the U.S., and who are at least 21 years of age. Recipients must provide legal proof of eligibility and a verifiable social security number.

Who May Not Apply: Students enrolled in a college degree program. Students who graduate before the 2013 application deadline are eligible to apply. Previous IPF recipients are not currently being considered for new awards. At this time, artists on temporary visas such as the O-1 visa are not eligible to apply.

Eligible Work: Still photography regardless of subject matter, genre, or process. Works submitted may be traditional photography projects or experimental works, but photographic techniques must be pivotal to the works submitted. The submission should consist of a mature, coherent body of work.

Examples of Non-Eligible Work: Film, video, interactive multimedia

Fellowship recipients will be notified by September 2013. Names of recipients and panelists will be announced shortly thereafter. The decisions of the Aaron Siskind Foundation and its designated judging panel as to who receives fellowship support will be final, private, and without appeal. As required by law, award funds must be used to further the artist’s creative endeavors. Recipients will be asked to provide a summary of the uses to which award funds are put. Award funds will be taxable to recipients in Tax Year 2013.

Application Information & Guidelines

Applicants must apply through the CaFE online application system at www.CallForEntry.org. Applications will not be accepted by any other delivery method. Internet access and a working email address are required in order to apply. The $10 entry fee must be paid via credit or debit card.

Once you have registered at CaFE, you can work on an application in multiple sessions, saving as you go, until it is completed and ready to submit. You can apply at any time up until the deadline; however, applications must be successfully received by 11:59 pm Mountain Time on May 24, 2013. Applications that are incomplete, or not received by the deadline, will be excluded from consideration. We recommended applying well in advance in order to avoid technical problems.

CaFE is a project of the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF), a non-profit arts service organization dedicated to the creative advancement and preservation of the arts.

A completed application consists of the following information & files:

Applicant Profile: Name and contact information

Work Samples: A portfolio of ten (10) digital images showing representative, recent work. If your work is best communicated visually by showing its physical or installed nature, or aspects of detail, use one or more of the ten images for that purpose.

Exactly ten (10) images must be submitted. They will be projected for the panelists via high-definition digital projectors and viewed at roughly 30 x 40 inches per image. Images must be standard baseline JPEG files with the .jpg extension. The recommended color profile is sRGB. Maximum file size is 1.8 MB. Image size can be no larger than 1920 x 1920 pixels (smaller images will be shown against a 1920 x 1920 black background). Images should be 72 PPI; any higher will unnecessarily increase your file size.

Text descriptors for each image: Title, Year Completed, Medium, Dimensions

Note: There are also fields for image “Value” and “Description” in the application. We don’t include this information in our review process. “Description” can be left blank. $0.00 can be entered for image “Value”. Whatever you enter in these fields — it will not be seen by jurors.

Work Statement: (500 words maximum) The purpose of the Statement is to give the panel a better understanding of your work while they are viewing it. It should be very clear and concise, and relate to the specific works you are submitting.

Career summary, artist resume/CV, or short bio (500 words maximum)

Additional Help and Information

CallForEntry.org provides detailed instructions and tutorials on How to Apply, Image Prep, and a Help/FAQ that will answer most questions. CaFE Tech Support staff is available via email to respond to technical questions or problems.
Announcing the Cord Prize, a new international contemporary art award established to support and acknowledge the practice of early and mid-career visual artists. The award comprises an individual first prize of $10,000, second prize of $1,000, and third prize of $500. Additionally, twenty-two artists will be selected for online exhibition and a piece of writing will be commissioned from the award jurors.

The inaugural Cord Prize – Contemporary art photography

Photography has become a universally accepted, unchallenged, medium of contemporary art. Concomitantly, photography’s capacity to influence our everyday lives has become exponentially important with the ubiquity of visual social media and the opening up of the possibilities for us to communicate and disseminate our photographic images independently of institutional support. It could be said that the ubiquity which photography has achieved, its establishment in the contemporary art canon, is both a blessing and a problem – marking a new beginning, a place to start from all over again, yet more challenging than ever to make meaningful photographic work that resonates in cultural space and will endure. The inaugural Cord Prize invites early and mid-career artists who are working within the field of photography to apply.

The brief

Against this setting, applicants to the inaugural prize are invited to submit up to 16 images of current work from a wholly or partially photo-based practice, using any photographic process or medium. Applications should be accompanied by a resume and text of up to 400 words detailing your research and practice. You may also wish to contextualise your work within what you see as the significant cultural issues at play within contemporary art photography.

Submissions open on 15th April, closing on 2nd June 2013.

Jurors

We are extremely pleased and excited to announce the jurors for this first edition of the award are the hugely respected and admired curators and writers Diana Edkins and Charlotte Cotton.

The jurors’ selection will be announced on Monday 17th June.

About

The Cord Prize, established by UK games industry veteran EA Lindsay, will be followed later in the year by the launch of CordContemporary, an online only gallery, presenting a portfolio of invited artists, partially selected from submissions to the various editions of the award. The ambition of CordContemporary is to establish the online gallery, with a programme of exhibitions supported by critical writing and serious curatorial practice, as a viable cultural presence; and a place to look forward to visiting as one would a physical gallery.

The Cord Prize will be awarded twice-annually, alternating focus on specific disciplines, with curated themes and critical surveys; and with photo-based practice as a recurring thread.
